Hamasyan, a jazz pianist from Armenia via California, has as strong a claim as any, a young man raised on his father’s heavy-rock collection while both studying jazz piano and becoming intrigued by the folk traditions of his homeland. It’s a diverse background that’s confidently articulated by the three-piece combo he leads. “For me,” Tigran confides, “it’s more like an electro-acoustic Armenian rock trio than a regular jazz trio. Sometimes we sound like a heavy-metal band, or a dubstep DJ, or like some late-19th-century Armenian composer.” For this sense of daring, Tigran has been on the receiving end of hat-tips from a legion of legendary jazzers, among them Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea. Is the baton being passed on? It appears so. The next chapter of jazz’s global adventures has begun.
